The scientific measurements of Russian physicist Andrey Volkov on Holy Saturday 2008

Andrey Volkov

At Easter 2008, the Russian physicist Andrey Volkov,1 Associate Professor in Mechanics of Materials, was appointed head of a scientific mission which aimed at investigating the miracle of the Holy Fire. The project was organized by Professor Alexander Moskovsky, for the needs of a documentary dedicated to the role of miracles in religion.

On Holy Saturday 2008, around 09:00 in the morning, Andrey Volkov entered the Church of the Holy Sepulchre armed with the necessary equipment. The basic instrument he used for his measurements was an oscilloscope which was connected to a laptop equipped with the appropriate software. He located himself approximately fifteen meters from the Holy Sepulchre and his basic priority was to record the phase of electromagnetic radiation at specific frequencies.

physicist for his measurements.

The results of his measurements, as well as the conclusions that were extracted from them, were described by him one year later, on 21 April 2009, in the following interview he gave to the Russian newspaper Vera:

– “Andrey Alexandrovich, why did you go especially to investigate the nature of the Holy Fire? Does this coincide with your scientific field?”
– “For the last 12 years I have been working on so-called low heat plasma.”
“What is that?”
– “The largest portion of the universe’s material is in a plasma state: the stars, the galactic clouds, the interstellar environment. It is a highly ionized gas… On Earth though, this is a rare phenomenon, which we learned to reproduce only fairly recently. For instance, in surgery they have started using scalpels made of a very thin plasma flow, which is heated up to about 5,000– 7,000 degrees. This is high heat plasma, with which we can only cut through matter. But there is also low heat plasma, at approximately 40–80 degrees, which can heal wounds. I work on the development of such medical healing machines, and we have already started to produce them.”
– “And what is the connection with the Holy Fire?”
– “Judging from the many descriptions, the appearance of the Holy Fire is accompanied by the appearance of plasma, which externally is very much like low heat plasma. For example, it is known that for a certain period of time this Fire does not burn the hands or face at all. Furthermore, for almost one thousand years, eyewitnesses of this event speak of certain flares that traverse the walls of the church before and after the arrival of the Fire.”
– “Are these plasma phenomena unique?”
– “Yes, they are. In the laboratory we investigate low heat plasma only in a vacuum. It may also exist equally in the air but only under strictly defined conditions …. and under very high humidity. However, over the Holy Sepulchre at Easter it is hot and the atmosphere is dry; there is no humidity which conducts electricity, and there is no source of potential variance and energy. Meanwhile, flashes appear there, packets of light that, in my opinion, then transform into a spark and bear the Fire.”2

According to the Russian physicist, the plasma phenomenon, which is believed to take place in the interior of the church, is entirely inexplicable and without justification from a scientific standpoint. The high point for his measurements came when the Holy Fire appeared while the patriarch was enclosed in the Sepulchre interior. The unexpected measurement was recorded at 14:04 Jerusalem time (15:04 Russian time). Approximately two minutes later, the patriarch came out with the Holy Fire. Volkov continues in his interview:

– “It had been a while since the patriarch of Jerusalem had entered the Aedicule and the ritual had begun... And suddenly – there it was! It recorded a change in the radiation phase because of an unknown signal. This happened at 15:04. One fluctuation – and nothing else that was similar. And soon the Patriarch of Jerusalem came out holding a lit candle.”
– “What was this fluctuation?”
– “Electrical load. What it is, where it came from, I do not know. Later, having already returned to Russia, I worked on decoding the recorded radio signals. The process [of the measurements] lasted six hours and thirty minutes. One measurement includes approximately one thousand “frames.” Quite a trying task. But it confirmed the following: prior to the appearance of the Fire there was electrical discharge… I cannot give you details at this point, because I am committed to the creator of the documentary. The chart with the measurements will be presented in detail there. But, the most important thing is what I have already mentioned: there was an electrical discharge… Why is this important? You see, here a complete picture is formed. I already told you about the plasma phenomena – which are a miracle on their own, since at the church there are no conditions whatsoever for their development. The second inexplicable event is the electrical charge of the air which is apparent even without the equipment – many feel that during the coming of the Holy Fire the hairs on their arms stand up. This is possible only under a very large difference of electrical potential, let’s say, between the roof of a house and the main floor. And this, if the house is made of pure quartz and there is a storm outside. But at Easter time at Jerusalem, as a rule, there are no storms, the weather is clear. And the Church of the Resurrection is made of various materials – marble, calcium rock, and wood. It has been built without a uniform plan and has a multitude of various auxiliary spaces. This is why the suspicion that a huge transformer necessary for the accumulation of electrical load and its subsequent discharge had initially been placed inside the church is simply unrealistic. However, the difference of electrical potential despite this develops! And most notably at a specific time: at Easter after the prayers inside the Aedicule. And then there is the last aspect we discovered – the appearance of the Fire is accompanied by electrical discharge. This means that the appearance of the Fire is an integral part of all of the incredible, entirely inexplicable phenomena that have an electrical nature. Is this not a confirmation of its miraculous nature?”3

Andrey Volkov states that, just before the appearance of the Holy Fire, three inexplicable phenomena took place.

The first is the unjustified presence of the plasma phenomenon.

The second is the also unjustified and inexplicable electrical charge of the air in combination with the confirmation of a large difference in electrical potential.

The third is the presence of electrical discharge at the moment of the appearance of the Holy Fire.

135._SCIENCE-RELIGION-2012
The Russian journal Science and Religion, April 2012.

In April of 2012, a more recent article published the results of Andrey Volkov’s tests. The title of the article was “The Miracle of the Holy Fire” and appeared in the Russian journal Science and Religion (Наука и Религия). The article is written by Volkov and four other Russian scientists: Prof. Alexander Moskovsky, Prof. Pavel Florensky, Sergei Soshinskaya and Tatyana Shutova. The more important portions of this publication are presented here. The five scientists state the following:

“... For the first time in history, a strong radio pulse was recorded at the moment of the Holy Fire’s descent, emanating from the aedicule… We have come closer to describing this event, something majestic for all Orthodox Christians, as we have found further evidence that the miracle of the Holy Fire is an actual occurrence and not a hoax or fraud, as some would like to believe...

Measuring the wavelengths on the electromagnetic spectrum during the descent of the Holy Fire in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

... At the descent of the Holy Fire, flashes of light diffuse across the walls of the church. These flashes may “descend” from the ceiling to the floor, simultaneously lighting candles. Taking this data into account, which is confirmed by numerous eyewitnesses, as well as video footage played in slow motion, we can assume that the lighting of the Holy Fire is the result of electrical discharge… It is clear that the appearance of this concentrated discharge on this specific day, at this specific time and at this particular location remains unknown, and the nature of this phenomenon is much more complex than a simple “lightning” during a storm… The appearance of the flashes on the church’s walls, as well as its chaotic movements, could be explained as a glow of low-temperature plasma, which arises as a result of the large potential difference between the ceiling and the floor of the church. The scientists are quite familiar with this phenomenon…

Accepting that the lighting of the Holy Fire is the result of an electrical discharge, it is logical to conclude that by recording the spectrum of long wavelength electromagnetic radiation we could also record the sharp rise in the intensity of the electromagnetic radiation with long wavelengths… It is a well-known fact that all electronic devices (e.g. computers, cameras, microphone, etc.) have certain electromagnetic spectrums, their own characteristic frequencies: they are either in the range of medium frequency (about 10-50kHz), or in the high frequency range (above 100 kHz). It is impossible for someone to confuse similar signals with electrical discharge, which is of exceptionally low frequency (from 0 to 10 kHz)…

The measuring and the recording of the electromagnetic spectrum took place in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on 26 April 2008 (9:10am to 3:35pm local time), on the eve of Easter, at a distance of fifteen to seventeen meters from the aedicule. The spectrum of electromagnetic radiation was automatically recorded every minute on the frequency range 0-360 kHz. The emission’s waveform was recorded and an automatic recalculation of its frequency response was conducted—the irradiance dependence in its frequency. The signal, which was to be recorded, must have caused an increase in the amplitude of the signal waveform and the sharp rise in the level of the signal’s response to low frequencies (long wavelength). Between 15:04 and 15:08 the descent of the Holy Fire took place. Seeing that the recording of the spectrum was automatic, and the moment of the signal’s appearance on the waveform only lasts for a few fractions of a second, the appearance of the signal in the church could not be detected. While analyzing the data afterward (the analysis of every image from the recorded waveforms), three flashes on the spectrum of electromagnetic radiation were detected, which could be interpreted as spectral signals of longwave radiation, that is, as signs of electrical discharge. For a comparison, let us look at the waveform of the signal base, which was recorded there a few minutes earlier.

Below: The increase in the amplitude of the waveform (point A) and the rise of the frequency response (point B) as recorded at the instant of the arrival of the Holy Fire.

 135._PALMO1

There is no doubt that the appearance of this signal was caused by an electrical discharge, the strength of which is comparable to the radiation emitted by an oxy-fuel welding and cutting machine while it is operating… Based on the above measurements, we can conclude that at the moment of the descent of the Holy Fire, one or many rather strong electrical discharges took place, which are apparently the reason the candles were lit. The source for the accumulation of the intense electrical potential is still not determined. Like all scientific hypotheses, this hypothesis has the right to exist, but needs to be checked. In this way, it would particularly preferable if the study of the phenomena that accompany the Holy Fire were to be continued on an even more advanced technological level and on an annual basis.”4

The authors of the article above make it clear that at the hour of the Holy Fire’s descent three obvious flashes were recorded on the spectrum of electromagnetic radiation, which are understood as being the presence of electrical discharges. In their opinion, electrical discharges cause sparks as well as the lighting of the candles. Nevertheless, as the authors themselves mention, similar measurements should be taken and be confirmed by other scientists as well.

Andrey Volkov’s research is of great interest and represents an entirely different approach to the miracle of the Holy Fire. In his view, the findings of his measurements are “a confirmation of the miraculous nature of the phenomenon.”

Let us turn now to the second part of the historical narratives resuming where we were on our journey in time: in the early twelfth century with the German historian Albert of Aachen.

2. Trans. from newspaper Vera, 21 April 2009:

3. Trans. from newspaper Vera, 21 April 2009:

4. Trans. from А. А. В. А. В. А. Шутова, Наука и Религия (Sciene and Religion), April 2012: “…
